An open roof under a starry sky, waves from the beautiful Rockaway Beach seen through the picture window...the lovely home of Mira Nakash was creatively decorated in blue and white, celebrating Israel At 60 to benefit Ezer Mizion's International Bone Marrow Registry for Cancer Patients.
Guests were greeted with an enticing array of middle-Eastern delicacies creating an ‘aroma of Israel' to whet the most discerning palate.
The spirit of togetherness was palpable as over two hundred Belle Harbor residents united together, singing along with the famed Yaakov Lemmer. The Hassidic entertainer's repertoire of melodies ranged from Israeli music to Yiddish favorites to Italian opera, astounding the delighted guests.
Irv Hackel, Ezer Mizion's Executive Director, spoke eloquently about the needs of the Registry. "I am proud, and you should be also, that Belle Harbor - this little community - has raised funds in the past five years that has saved the lives of FOUR Jews. Your hands have reached across the ocean to Italy, Argentina and Israel to save the lives of your brethren."
Rosalyn Brown, a resident of Belle Harbor, spoke of her recent trip to Israel. Her father, unfortunately, suffered a stroke. "With my broken Hebrew and Yiddish and their broken English and a dictionary in between, those wonderful Ezer Mizion staff and volunteers managed to convey such warmth and support and provided us with meals and all the practical details so much needed. They were there morning, noon and night, a pillar of kindhearted assistance."
As each guest left, they gladly accepted additional contribution envelopes to be given to friends and a lovely gift package for themselves, their faces truly reflecting the beauty of ‘Hinei Ma Tov Umanayim Shevat Achim Gam Yachad" (How good and pleasant it is to sit together with friends) in a wonderful, inspirational evening of chessed for Ezer Mizion and Jewish patients everywhere.
