| Perhaps for the first time within the chareidi community, a support group has been formed for mothers of young adults (over age 18) with mental health challenges. The pilot project was an immediate success, drawing an overflow 16 participants - an amazing statistic, considering the protective denial of the existence of mentally ill family members that often exists.
The support group is a closed group with an emphasis on discretion. Even the mental health professionals from Ezer Mizion are not permitted to join the sessions.
For the mothers, many who have had to deal for years with their challenge almost entirely on their own, the opportunity to open up to others in an unthreatening environment is an absolute lifesaver. The group is close-knit, with an accepting atmosphere that enables the mothers to share their feelings and fears with the people who will understand them more than anyone else.
The support group, led by Rivka Zuckerman, a certified social worker and professional group-parenting counselor, with special expertise in working with the mental health population, is structured both in time and membership.
In view of the amazing success of the support group for mothers in Bnei Brak, and following requests from mothers in Jerusalem, Ezer Mizion is planning a similar framework in Jerusalem. To join the new group or to obtain more information contact Rina Bina or Ayelet Gavra at (03)614-4590/525.
The demand is clear, and undoubtedly, this group will lead to the opening of yet more such groups, which are vitally needed in order to relieve the tremendous emotional burden on parents of mentally ill children.
