Asperger's Syndrome Awareness Symposium (08/08)

The Jacob Fried Headquarters of Ezer Mizion was recently packed with an unanticipated overflow crowd of over 800 people who came to learn about Asperger's syndrome, a development disorder that affects the child's ability to communicate and is classified under the umbrella of autism.

Ezer Mizion, in its continuing service to the community at large, is committed to advocacy and dissemination of information for special needs.  When it became apparent that Asperger's Syndrome was a real issue facing many families in the community, Ezer Mizion - in conjunction with the EFI Asperger Association in Israel - organized a symposium to create awareness and to provide guidance and information on relevant services.

The symposium increased understanding of all the ramifications to those who are afflicted and to their families, and expounded upon an encouraging approach that will hopefully bring solutions and improved quality of life to those affected by Asperger's syndrome.

The symposium featured experts in the field, Dr. Yoav Cohen, Supervisor/Director of in-patient psychiatric ward for children and adults at Hadassah Ein Kerem, and Dr. Ofer Golan, Member of the Psychology Faculty at Bar Ilan University, whose analytic approach was encouraging to the participants.

Following the two presentations, the symposium featured a heartfelt narrative by Jacob N., the father of a 12 year-old son, who shared his personal story of life with Eli who - after many years of suffering - has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's. The diagnosis has resulted in the sorely needed structured, monitored program specifically tailored to manage Eli's condition. Mr. N expressed his appreciation of Ezer Mizion's professional and caring support.

The hundreds of participants at this empowering evening went home no longer feeling alone in their difficulties and optimistic that by reaching the right professional resources, they can begin to alleviate the hardships and challenges of their life situation.
